Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

The moment Baby Groot plugs in the song in the opening sequence of the movie and starts dancing to it, we are introduced to arguably the cutest and funniest opening scene in a movie. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is as awesome as Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Vol. 2, and takes us on a hilarious roller coaster ride.

With advent of technology visual effects are improving with every other movie and Marvel is leading the pack in this field. This movie has probably the coolest visual effects till date and is a treat to watch. Awesome use of 70’s/80’s music sets the tone perfectly and provides the audience an emotional connect to the movie. Director James Gunn’s choice of the songs used in the movie is wonderful. The star-cast is brilliant. Chris Pratt is great as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, so is Zoe Saldana as Gamora.  Gunn has done great detailing towards character development of many in this movie, noteworthy being the interesting character of Nebula(Karen Gillan). Dave Bautista is amazing as Drax. Who could have thought everyone’s favorite WWE Superstar had such great acting skills too. His interactions with Mantis(Pom Klementieff) are outright hilarious. Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha is menacing, but does not get enough screen time. Baby Groot in just one word is adorable. He would be one of the reasons to watch this movie over and over again. Also not to forget Rocket who is at his nastiest and wittiest best. But the greatest find of this movie has been Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta. The blue skinned leader of the Ravagers might have been a fringe character in the first part, but in this movie he has an incredible presence. Kurt Russell as Ego is good, but we could see the evil coming from a distance, so no big surprises there. The extended family sequences between Ego and Quill do make the movie dull in some parts.

The movie has exquisite CG work all throughout which takes us on a thrill ride. This makes it a must watch in 3D. Special mention for scenes where Rocket takes on Yondu’s army and later Yondu and Rocket destroy Taserface’s mutinous group.

Summers are here and the Guardians open the account for some more exciting movies to come. Guardians of the Galaxy first part was probably the most path breaking, out of the league movie ever from MCU, and that sets up even higher expectations from this installment. Usually most of the sequels never live up to it, but, to our surprise, Volume 2 does not fall short in entertainment quotient. If not better, it is probably as good as the 2014 outing. Some may argue that there is not much build up to the Infinity Wars. But that adds to the beauty of the film, as it can be simply enjoyed as a standalone movie, as a sequel to the original. Also there are multiple post credits which generate enough curiosity.

Watch out for some of the coolest special effects on big screen.

My Rating: 8.4/10
